In October 2013, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE), in
partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana (BBBS-KY), was funded
by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to implement a mentoring research best practices project that explored
whether three types of parent/guardian level variables (psychosocial
parent/family characteristics, parent engagement in the mentoring match, and
parenting style) influence match quality, match length, and youth outcomes.
This study was designed to describe these factors, as well as investigate how these factors impact match length, match strength, and youth program outcomes. Data to inform both objectives was collected using a longitudinal multimode approach with youth, mentors and parents in the BBBS-KY program in the metro Louisville area. In addition, data from 16 local school districts provided measures of academic performance, school attendance, and disciplinary suspensions. Data were collected at multiple time points from youth, volunteer mentors, and parents/guardians. These data included BBBS-America standard surveys (Youth Outcomes Survey, and Volunteer and Youth Strength of Relationship Surveys). PIRE supplemented the standard BBBS data collection efforts with project-specific baseline volunteer mentor survey and several formative and outcome based inserts to supplement the data that was regularly collected from youth and mentors. The PIRE and BBBS-KY teams also created a project-specific parent/guardian survey to better understand the impact of parental factors on match dynamics and youth mentoring program outcomes. Due to low literacy levels of parents/guardians, this survey was administered as a mixed-mode, audio-computer assisted interview (ACASI). Additional data sources for this study included data from (a) coding of qualitative case review notes for selected aspects of matches by BBBS-KY match support specialists, (b) academic data collected from school districts, and (c) data collected on general match characteristics (e.g., match closure status) collected by BBBS-KY as part of their standard business operations. Most measures were collected early in the match (either match formation or three months into the match) and at 12 months into the match.

The California Families Project (CFP) is an ongoing longitudinal study of Mexican origin families in Northern California. This study uses community, school, family, and individual characteristics to examine developmental pathways that increase risk for and resilience to drug use in Mexican-origin youth. This study also examines the impact that economic disadvantage and cultural traditions have in Mexican-origin youth. The CFP includes a community-based sample of 674 families and children of Mexican origin living in Northern California, and includes annual assessments of parents and children. Participants with Mexican surnames were drawn at random from school rosters of students during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school year. Data collection included multi-method assessments of a broad range of psychological, familial, scholastic, cultural, and neighborhood factors. Initiation of the research at age 10 was designed to assess the focal children before the onset of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) use, thus enabling the evaluation of how hypothesized risk and resilience mechanisms operate to exacerbate early onset during adolescence or help prevent its occurrence. This study includes a diversity of families that represent a wide range of incomes, education, family history, and family structures, including two-parent and single-parent families.
The accompanying data file consists of 674 family cases with each case representing a focal child and at least one parent (Two-parent: n=549, 82 percent; Single-parent: n=125, 18 percent). Of the 3,139 total variables, 839 pertain to the focal child, 1,376 correspond to the mother, and 908 items pertain to the father.
Please note: While the California Families Project is a longitudinal study, only the baseline data are currently available in this data collection.

This poll is part of a continuing series of monthly surveys
that solicit public opinion on the presidency and on a range of other
political and social issues. This survey, administered to youths aged
13-17, solicited opinions of President Bill Clinton and his handling
of the presidency. The teens were also asked to comment on the
greatest problem facing their generation, racial problems in their
schools and communities, the presence of sexual activity, alcohol,
drugs, and tobacco in the school system, and how frequently they read
the newspaper and watched television. A series of questions covered
the topic of sex, specifically, whether respondents believed it was
okay to engage in premarital sex, whether condoms should be
distributed in school, and how they felt about same-sex relations. In
addition, respondents were asked about their relationships with their
parents, including the ability of their parents to relate to them,
pressures placed on them by their parents, how often a parent was
actually in the home with them, and whether they communicated with
their parents about difficult topics, including sex and the use of
alcohol and drugs. A series of questions addressed issues and problems
in the student's school. Topics covered cheating, teenage drivers,
part-time employment, the use of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana,
computer access, beeper/pager ownership, body-piercing, sex, tattoos,
suicide, HIV virus/AIDS, firearms, racial relations, sexual
harassment, and homosexuality. Respondents were asked for their
opinions on trying juveniles as adults in the legal system and on the
alleged affair between President Clinton and former White House intern
Monica Lewinsky. Respondents were also asked about their self-image,
their involvement in extracurricular and volunteer activities, whether
they received an allowance, whether they played a musical instrument,
and what their post-high school plans were. Background information on
respondents includes age, race, ethnicity, sex, political party,
religion, number of siblings, demographics of the school attended,
grade in school, and the education level, marital status, and
employment status of the parents.

Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS) was
designed to study the adaptation process of the immigrant second
generation which is defined broadly as United States-born children
with at least one foreign-born parent or children born abroad but
brought at an early age to the United States. The original survey was
conducted with large samples of second-generation immigrant children
attending the 8th and 9th grades in public and private schools in the
metropolitan areas of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale in Florida and San Diego,
California. Conducted in 1992, the first survey had the purpose of
ascertaining baseline information on immigrant families, children's
demographic characteristics, language use, self-identities, and
academic attainment. The total sample size was 5,262. Respondents came
from 77 different nationalities, although the sample reflects the most
sizable immigrant nationalities in each area. Three years later,
corresponding to the time in which respondents were about to graduate
from high school, the first follow-up survey was conducted. Its
purpose was to examine the evolution of key adaptation outcomes
including language knowledge and preference, ethnic identity,
self-esteem, and academic attainment over the adolescent years. The
survey also sought to establish the proportion of second-generation
youths who dropped out of school before graduation. This follow-up
survey retrieved 4,288 respondents or 81.5 percent of the original
sample. Together with this follow-up survey, a parental survey was
conducted. The purpose of this interview was to establish directly
characteristics of immigrant parents and families and their outlooks
for the future including aspirations and plans for the children. Since many immigrant parents did not understand English, this questionnaire was translated and administered in six different foreign languages. In
total, 2,442 parents or 46 percent of the original student sample were
interviewed. During 2001-2003, or a decade after the original survey,
a final follow-up was conducted. The sample now averaged 24 years of
age and, hence, patterns of adaptation in early adulthood could be
readily assessed. The original and follow-up surveys were conducted
mostly in schools attended by respondents, greatly facilitating access
to them. Most respondents had already left school by the time of the
second follow-up so they had to be contacted individually in their
place of work or residence. Respondents were located not only in the
San Diego and Miami areas, but also in more than 30 different states,
with some surveys returned from military bases overseas. Mailed
questionnaires were the principal source of completed data in this
third survey. In total, CILS-III retrieved complete or partial
information on 3,613 respondents representing 68.9 percent of the
original sample and 84.3 percent of the first follow-up.Relevant
adaptation outcomes measured in this survey include educational
attainment, employment and occupational status, income, civil status
and ethnicity of spouses/partners, political attitudes and
participation, ethnic and racial identities, delinquency and
incarceration, attitudes and levels of identification with American
society, and plans for the future.

Comparison of Older Volunteers and Older Nonvolunteers in the Philadelphia Area, 1993-1998 (ICPSR 20460)

This research was undertaken to uncover the predictors of volunteerism for older persons and to determine the mental health benefits of such activity. The study was conducted from August 1993 until July 1998 in the greater Philadelphia area. A sample of White and African American males and females aged 65 and older were chosen for the study. For the study, four types of volunteer activity were developed. The first two types were "continuous volunteers," those who volunteer throughout the life course, and "continuous nonvolunteers," those who never volunteered. The third type, the "new volunteer," is a person who never volunteered earlier in life but has begun volunteering in later years, most probably as a substitute for lost work or family roles. The last type is the "lost volunteer," the person who once participated in volunteer activities but now has withdrawn from the role.
Structural factors included age and income. Cultural factors included perceived importance and past volunteer activity. Perceived importance included level of agreement to a series of five statements such as, "People with unused skills and talents should make use of them by doing volunteer work," and "Volunteer work is essential to meet the communitys' needs." These items were developed specifically for use by persons aged 65 and older. In order to determine past volunteer behavior, a composite measure was created which included any prior volunteer behavior mentioned by both the current volunteers and those currently not volunteering, as well as including any volunteer work of the current volunteers that was a continuation of prior work.

The 2002 Detroit Area Study (DAS) is a face-to-face survey of adults in the Detroit, Michigan tri-county area. Respondents were asked questions about their place of residence, level of political participation, general political attitudes, concern about the environment, environmental consumerism, environmental justice, and the quality of the environment in their current neighborhood and the neighborhood in which they were raised. Information was also collected on respondents' job responsibilities, current financial situation, the availability of childcare and transportation, and their own feelings of self-worth. Interviewer observations about the condition of the respondent's neighborhood were also included. Demographic variables include sex, age, race, ethnicity, marital status, household income, education level, employment status, occupation, and industry, labor union membership, religious preference, frequency of religious attendance, and the presence of children in the household.

This data collection investigates the relationship between men and women's work and personality, and provides information regarding work, parenting practices, cognitive functioning, and orientation toward self and others. Work-related variables describe the place and conditions of employment, including the degree of supervision, placement within the workplace hierarchy, and the complexity of work with people, data, and things. Respondents also were questioned regarding job satisfaction, expectations for the future, job security, and union membership and activities. Additionally, respondents provided a complete work history for all jobs held for six months or more. Respondents who were parents at the time of the interview were queried regarding parenting practices and parental values, including methods of child discipline and reinforcement employed, and the level of educational achievement and future occupation preferred for their children. In addition, respondents were asked to select the most and least desirable qualities for their children from a prepared list of attributes. Respondents also were questioned regarding social orientation and self-concept. To measure social orientation, respondents were asked to state the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with statements indicating authoritarian or nonauthoritarian tendencies, different criteria of morality and amorality, trustfulness and distrustfulness, and statements indicating receptivity or resistance to change. Self-concept was examined by questions concerning self-confidence, self-deprecation, anxiety, fatalism/mastery, and the degree to which respondents believe their ideas conform to those of others. Respondents also were asked to select the values most and least desired for themselves and their children. Background information collected for respondents and their families includes household composition, metropolitan/nonmetropolitan area of residence, marital status and duration of marriage, education, ethnicity, religion, country of birth and year of immigration, wife's age and employment status, grandparents' occupations, and parents' country of birth, occupation, education, and age when the respondent was born. Also recorded were the number of brothers and sisters with whom the respondent grew up, the occupation of each sibling, whether the respondent lived with his parents and what his parents' occupations were when he was 16, the age and education level of each child living in the respondent's household, and the respondent's social class self-placement.

The Impact of Juvenile Correctional Confinement on the Transition to Adulthood and Desistance from Crime, 1994-2008 [United States] (ICPSR 36401)

To assess "double transition" (the transition from confinement to community in addition to the transition from adolescence to adulthood), the study used nationally representative data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) to compare psychosocial maturity for three groups: approximately 162 adolescents placed in correctional confinement, 398 young adults who reported an arrest before age 18 but no juvenile correctional confinement, and 11,614 youths who reported no arrests before age 18.
Three dimensions of psychosocial maturity (responsibility, temperance, and perspective) were assessed at Waves 1 (baseline) and Wave 3 (post-confinement) in models assessing the effects of confinement on the attainment (or non-attainment) of markers of successful transition to adulthood at Wave 4.
Results were contextualized with data from the Survey of Youth in Residential Facilities and discussed with respect to the role of confinement in interrupting the development of psychosocial maturity in the transition to adulthood and for young adult attainment more generally.

Jobs II Preventive Intervention for Unemployed Job Seekers, 1991-1993: [Southeast Michigan] (ICPSR 2739)

These data explore the impact of job loss and unemployment
on workers' stress and mental health, and evaluate the potential
benefits of participation in a job-search skills seminar. Respondents
were recruited from four offices of the Michigan Employment Security
Commission (MESC) in southeastern Michigan. A group of 31,560
unemployed persons were approached for the study. Of these, about
23,000 failed to meet basic initial criteria because they were new
entrants to the labor market, already re-employed, or just
accompanying others in line. Respondents were kept in the pool if they
were not on strike and not expecting to be recalled for work in the
next few months or planning to retire in the next two years. The
resulting group of 7,956 were then assessed for symptoms of depression
and willingness to participate in a job-seeking skills seminar. These
final exclusion criteria resulted in a pool of 3,402. A screening
questionnaire (Part 1) was administered to that pool, which allowed
the researchers to classify respondents as being at high risk for
depression and anxiety or at low risk. All of the high-risk
respondents and a random sample of the low-risk participants were
invited to participate in the study and in the MESC's Job
Opportunities and Basic Skills II (JOBSII) intervention program, which
consisted of a set of job-search skills seminars. JOBS II was
patterned after JOBS I, which was offered by the MESC in the late
1980s. A pretest questionnaire (Part 2) was mailed to respondents
between February and July 1991, two weeks prior to the invitation to
participate in the JOBS intervention seminar. The questionnaire
addressed the situation surrounding the respondents' loss of
employment, quality of work life in previous job, level of economic
hardship, attitudes toward obtaining a new job, social support
network, self-esteem, feelings of anxiety and/or depression, health
problems, and substance abuse history and related problems. At the
same time, a mail questionnaire was sent to each respondent's
significant other (Part 6). Items in this questionnaire focused on the
length of their relationship with the respondent, the level of support
given to the respondent, the significant other's observations
regarding the daily activities of the respondent during this period of
job loss, the significant other's feelings of anxiety and/or
depression, and the significant other's level of economic hardship. A
second and third mail questionnaire were sent six weeks (Part 3) and
six months (Part 4) after the respondents' participation in a JOBS
intervention program job-seeking skills seminar. For those respondents
who had gained employment, questions were asked regarding current
employment status, sense of job permanence, employee benefits, and
feelings toward current job. Those respondents still seeking
employment were queried about their intention to continue their job
search, job-seeking behaviors, confidence in their ability to obtain a
job, and the presence or lack of a social support network. For those
respondents still unemployed six months after the intervention
seminar, additional questions covered receipt of unemployment benefits
and how necessary those benefits were. Similarly, significant others
were queried both six weeks (Part 7) and six months (Part 8) after the
respondents' participation in the job intervention. Topics focused on
their relationship with the respondent, the observed daily activities
of the respondent, the emotional support given to the respondent, the
respondent's job-seeking behavior, the respondent's and significant
other's feelings of anxiety and/or depression, and the level of shared
responsibility regarding the payment of bills and other economic
hardships. Finally, respondents were questioned through a mail survey
two years (Part 5) after their participation in the intervention
seminar about ,their employment status, quality of work life, financial
strain endured, social support system, relationship satisfaction,
self-esteem, feelings of anxiety and/or depression, health, and sense
of control. Significant others were also queried after two years (Part
9) regarding their relationship with the respondent, the significant
other's familiarity with the respondent's feelings of anxiety and/or
depression, their social support network, and the significant other's
feelings of anxiety and/or depression. Background information on
respondents includes age, sex, race, Hispanic descent, education,
marital status, age of children in household, number of financial
dependents, and household income. Background information on
significant others includes age, sex, race, Hispanic descent,
education, and employment status. Following the conclusion of the JOBS
intervention program, respondents were asked to complete a mail
questionnaire (Part 10) evaluating the effectiveness of the program
agenda and assessing the relevance of the seminar to their job search,
the effectiveness of the seminar trainers, inoculation against
setbacks, impact on their self-esteem, effect on their interviewing
skills, and resume preparedness.

The purpose of this study was to contribute to the conceptual understanding and practical application of social integration theory to health behaviors. The research aimed to investigate the protective effects of community involvement in HIV/AIDS and gay-related organizations for HIV/AIDS sexual risk behavior among Latino gay or bisexual men and transgender individuals in Chicago and San Francisco. As part of this, the study examined HIV prevalence and the socioeconomic correlates of HIV infection, sexual risk behaviors, and substance use. Further, the study tested whether community involvement in AIDS and LGBT organizations moderated the relationship of racial and homosexual stigma to sexual risk behavior. Data were collected from a sample of 643 individuals (Chicago: n=320; San Francisco: n=323) through respondent-driven sampling and computer-assisted self-administered interviews. Demographic variables included ethnic identification, sexual identification, ZIP code (only available in restricted use data), country of birth, years in the United States, employment status, income, family religion, age, and health/STD status.

The Monitoring the Future (MTF) project is a long-term epidemiologic and etiologic study of substance use among youth and adults in the United States. It is conducted at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research and is funded by a series of investigator-initiated research grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The MTF panel study consists of six different survey forms (five forms from 1976-1988), and each survey contains a "core" set of questions about demographics and substance use. This study contains the "core" data for these questions compiled across all survey forms and years in which they are included for the longitudinal panel participants. The core panel dataset includes data for the base year (BY) 12th grade surveys (modal age 18) and their young adult follow-up FU surveys (modal ages 19-30).
