How to Obtain ICPSR Metadata in XML

Obtaining All Study Abstracts

A compressed file of all 6000+ xml files is automatically uploaded to our Web site on the first of the month.

Obtaining Individual Study Abstracts

We recognize that some users would prefer to simply download individual XML files, of only the files that have been recently updated. As such, we have created a few utilities to that end.

To get a list of XML files that have been updated in the last 90 days, simply view updates to the XML. This function lists the xml files by date, and links to the raw XML in the same fashion as the form below (read the caveat). The date on which the document was last updated is stored in:

/codeBook/docDscr/citation/verStmt/version

To obtain individual files, enter the ICPSR study number into the search form below:

Caveat: Just to warn you, this function can be a bit slow, depending upon your Web browser. Please note that the form above will return either an error message or display xml that doesn't display the full doctype, depending upon your Web browser and operating system. Either way, the source document will have valid xml and the full doctype. Choose the 'view source' menu command to see the true xml.
